History

Early years

Originally a struggling team, FC Bayern München emerged as a German powerhouse after being created by members of a Munich gymnastics club. In 1932, they took home their first national championship, but prejudice continued during the Nazi regime. They were able to ensure financial stability following World War II, and in 1965 they were granted a place in the newly established , which set them up for future success.

The golden years

Under coaches such as Branko Zebec and Udo Lattek, Bayern Munich proved to be a formidable force in the early Bundesliga years, winning both national and international championships. In 1969, they achieved the first Bundesliga double, winning the DFB-Pokal and the European Cup Winners' Cup in back-to-back years. With the likes of legendary players like Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller at their helm, Bayern proved too strong, winning three straight Bundesliga titles and the European Cup. Because of their penchant for narrow victories, the era also gave rise to the phrase “Bayerndusel”.

From FC Breitnigge to FC Hollywood

The 1980s saw FC Bayern Munich experience both on-field success (Bundesliga titles) and off-field challenges (financial difficulties, managerial changes). In 1996, they took home the UEFA Cup, but European success eluded them. The moniker “FC Hollywood” originated from player disputes.

Renewed international success

Under Hitzfeld (1998–2004), Bayern dominated, winning doubles, the Bundesliga, and the Champions League. After two more doubles by Magath, the success continued until Hitzfeld's comeback due to inconsistency (2007). For the first time in ten years, the squad did not make it into the Champions League due to underperformance.

Domestic dominance and continental treble

Following a reconstruction in 2007–2008, Robben & Ribery (Robbery) helped Bayern dominate. In 2013, Heynckes guided them to a triple crown. Guardiola failed in the Champions League after winning the league three times. Despite winning another league title, Ancelotti was fired. It wasn't until Heynckes' fourth stay in the league that Kovač achieved a league and cup double in 2019.

Return to German coaches

In 2020, Flick guided Bayern to a treble (league, cup, and Champions League) and a sextuple (Super Cups plus Club World Cup) in 2021. The league was won by Nagelsmann in 2022. Following in his footsteps, Tuchel won the Bundesliga for a record-tying eleventh time in a row in 2023.

Kits

Bayern's home uniform colors have changed over time, starting out predominantly as white and maroon and shifting to red since 1974 with sporadic excursions into blue and stripes. There has been greater variety in away outfits; there is now a Brazil-inspired kit for the games in addition to white, black, and blue options.

Stadiums

Matches at Theresienwiese and Schyrenplatz served as the starting points of Bayern Munich's stadium tour. Then, in 1907, they joined Münchner Sport-Club at Leopoldstraße after moving to Clemensstraße in 1901. They co-shared Grünwalder Stadion with following the war until its destruction. Olympiastadion had been constructed for the 1972 Olympics, but Allianz Arena had to be completed in 2005 due to concerns. It has a 75,000 capacity with an exterior layer that is translucent and lighted in white for national team matches and red for Bayern games. In May 2012, the Allianz Arena hosted FC Bayern Erlebniswelt, the club's museum.

Rivalries

In addition to its historical rivalry with Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich has local rivalries with 1860 Munich and 1. FC Nürnberg. Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund, and Schalke 04 have all threatened Bayern's hegemony on a national level. Manchester United, AC Milan, and are prominent competitors on the international scene.
