O’Rourke Out with Back Stress Fracture; Allen, Phillips Miss Australia T20Is, Santner Faces Fitness Race
Major Blow for New Zealand Ahead of Busy Home Season
New Zealand cricket has been dealt a heavy injury setback with fast bowler Will O’Rourke ruled out for at least three months due to a stress fracture in his lower back. The 22-year-old pacer, who impressed against India and Zimbabwe earlier this year, now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
O’Rourke will miss the upcoming white-ball series against Australia, England, and West Indies, and remains doubtful for the three-Test series against West Indies in December.
Timeline for Recovery
The injury was first detected when O’Rourke complained of stiffness during the opening Test against Zimbabwe. He will now begin a three-month strength and conditioning programme before a clearer return date is decided.
Coach Rob Walter expressed cautious optimism, stressing that the team hopes to avoid surgery:
“We’re really feeling for Will at the moment and wishing him a speedy recovery. He’s had such an impressive start to his career. At this stage, we will reassess after three months and hope the healing process has gone well,” Walter said.
Phillips Ruled Out of Australia T20Is
Glenn Phillips, who was earlier forced to miss the Zimbabwe tour with a groin injury, has been officially ruled out of the T20I series against Australia.
The three matches are scheduled for October 1, 3, and 4 at Mount Maunganui. His absence will leave a gap in the Black Caps’ middle order, where he has been a consistent contributor in recent years.
Allen Undergoes Surgery
In another setback, Finn Allen has undergone surgery for a stress fracture in his right foot. The explosive opener is expected to need three months of recovery, ruling him out of the white-ball assignments in October and November.
Santner’s Fitness Race
Captain Mitchell Santner is facing a race against time to feature in the Australia series. He returned from the Hundred with groin pain, which requires abdominal surgery.
Despite the setback, Walter confirmed that Santner will be named in the squad, with a final call on his participation to be made closer to the start of the series.
“Mitch is a world-class player and a crucial part of our T20 setup, both for his skills and leadership. We’ll give him every chance to be fit,” Walter said.
Opportunity for Emerging Players
Walter acknowledged the disappointment of losing key names but pointed to the silver lining — chances for others to step up in a high-profile series against Australia.
“It’s disappointing to lose Glenn and Finn, who’ve been important batting options for us. But like in Zimbabwe, their absence allows others to stake their claim,” he added.
Positive News: Sears Returns
There is at least one boost for the Kiwis: fast bowler Ben Sears has recovered from the side strain that kept him out of the Zimbabwe tour. He is expected to be available for selection against Australia, strengthening the pace attack.
