Abhinav Kashyap Biography
Abhinav Singh Kashyap (born 6 September 1974) is an Indian film director, screenwriter and occasional actor who works in Hindi cinema. He was born in Obra, Uttar Pradesh, where his father worked for the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation, and he is the younger brother of the director Anurag Kashyap. He was schooled at Hillgrange Preparatory School in Dehradun and at the Scindia School in Gwalior, and graduated in English (Honours) from Hansraj College, University of Delhi, in 1995.
Kashyap began directing for television in 1995 and moved into films as a writer, contributing the script of Jung (2000) and dialogue for Manorama Six Feet Under (2007) and 13B (2009). He worked as an assistant to Mani Ratnam on Yuva (2004), in which he also appeared as Trilok, and acted in Paanch. His directorial debut came with the action comedy Dabangg (2010), which he co-wrote with Dilip Shukla; starring Salman Khan and introducing Sonakshi Sinha, it was a major commercial success and won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. He also received story credit on Osthe (2011), the Tamil remake.
His second and most recent film as director was Besharam (2013), led by Ranbir Kapoor and Pallavi Sharda with Rishi and Neetu Kapoor in support; it was a critical and commercial failure. He has since worked on short films in technical roles and was a creative consultant on Nikita Roy (2025). In June 2020 Kashyap publicly accused Salman Khan, his father Salim Khan and brothers Arbaaz and Sohail Khan of sabotaging his career; the Khan family disputed the claims and said it had begun legal action. He renewed and expanded his allegations against Salman Khan in 2025.
