Amrita Rao, born 7 June 1981 in Bombay (now Mumbai), is an Indian actress who works primarily in Hindi films. She comes from a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin family and is known for her quintessential girl-next-door portrayals. Rao studied at Canossa Girls School in Andheri and enrolled at Sophia College, Mumbai, to read for a psychology degree, but dropped out to pursue modelling. Her younger sister, Preetika Rao, is also an actress; the two appeared together in commercials during Rao’s college years.
Rao played her first leading role as Anjali Thapar in Raj Kanwar’s Ab Ke Baras (2002), which earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, and appeared the same year in The Legend of Bhagat Singh. Her first commercial success came with the romantic drama Ishq Vishk (2003), for which she won the IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female. She followed it with Main Hoon Na and Masti in 2004, and with Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivah (2006), regarded as a defining film of her career. Welcome to Sajjanpur (2008) brought her a Stardust Award for Best Actress. Across her career she has received an IIFA Award and two Stardust Awards.
Later work included Love U… Mr. Kalakaar! (2011) and Jolly LLB (2013), in which she played Sandhya. After a five-year absence she returned in Thackeray (2019), portraying Meena Thackeray. In 2025 she reprised the role of Sandhya opposite Arshad Warsi in Jolly LLB 3, marking her return to cinema after a six-year hiatus; the film drew generally positive reviews. Rao married radio jockey Anmol Sood, known publicly as RJ Anmol, on 15 May 2016 after seven years of dating, and the couple have one son, born in 2020.
