Arvind Swamy Biography

Arvind Swamy, born 18 June 1970 in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, is an Indian actor, film director and entrepreneur who works chiefly in Tamil cinema, with credits in Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam films. Born to the actor Delhi Kumar, he was adopted by his biological mother’s sister and her husband, the industrialist V. D. Swami, and the Bharatanatyam dancer Vasantha Swamy. He studied at Sishya School and Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School, graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Loyola College, Madras, in 1990, and took a master’s degree in international business at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

Mani Ratnam introduced him in Thalapathi (1991), where he was credited simply as Arvind. Roja (1992) and Bombay (1995) brought him nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Tamil and made him a national name, and he followed them with Marupadiyum (1993), Paasamalargal (1994), Indira (1995), Devaraagam (1996) and Rajiv Menon’s Minsara Kanavu (1997). He stepped back from acting after 2000 and returned in 2013 with Kadal.

His second innings was defined by Thani Oruvan (2015), where his portrayal of Dr. Siddharth Abhimanyu won him four awards, a role he reprised in the Telugu film Dhruva (2016). He has since won Filmfare Critics Awards for Best Actor – Tamil for Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018), Thalaivii (2021) and Meiyazhagan (2024). He made his directing debut with an episode of the Netflix anthology Navarasa (2021). He is a recipient of four Filmfare Awards South, one Tamil Nadu State Film Award and two SIIMA Awards. Outside cinema he runs the talent management firm Talent Maximus, and he hosted a season of Neengalum Vellalam Oru Kodi on Star Vijay. He married Gayathri Ramamurthy in 1994; they divorced in 2010, and he married Aparna Mukherjee in 2012. He has two children.
