Christopher Nolan Biography
Sir Christopher Edward Nolan CBE (born 30 July 1970) is a British and American filmmaker, widely regarded as one of the leading directors of the 21st century. He was born in the Westminster district of London to Brendan James Nolan (1936–2009), a British advertising creative director, and Christina Jensen, an American former flight attendant who also taught English. He was raised in Highgate, spent summers in Evanston, Illinois, and holds dual British and American citizenship. He has an older brother, Matthew, and a younger brother, the filmmaker Jonathan Nolan.
Nolan was educated at Haileybury and Imperial Service College and then at University College London, which he chose for its Steenbeck editing suite and 16 mm cameras. He served as president of the UCL Film Society and graduated in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. At UCL he met Emma Thomas, whom he married in 1997 and with whom he founded the production company Syncopy in 2001; she has produced all of his films. The couple have four children and live in Los Angeles.
After his independently made feature debut Following (1998), Nolan broke through with Memento (2000) and moved into studio filmmaking with Insomnia (2002). He rebooted the Batman franchise with Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012), and directed The Prestige (2006), Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017) and Tenet (2020). His films have earned more than $6 billion worldwide, making him the seventh-highest-grossing director of all time, and Memento, The Dark Knight and Inception have been selected for the US National Film Registry. Oppenheimer (2023) won him Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture. He was appointed CBE in the 2019 New Year Honours and knighted in 2024, has served as president of the Directors Guild of America since September 2025, and his adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey opened in the United States and United Kingdom on 17 July 2026.
