Genelia D’Souza Biography

Genelia Deshmukh, born Genelia D’Souza on 5 August 1987 in Bombay (now Mumbai), is an Indian actress who has worked in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada cinema. Raised in the Bandra suburb in a Mangalorean Catholic family, she is the daughter of Jeanette D’Souza, a former managing director at a pharmaceutical multinational who left her job in 2004 to help manage her daughter’s career, and Neil D’Souza, a senior official at Tata Consultancy Services. Her first name is a portmanteau of her parents’ names. She has a younger brother, Nigel D’Souza, and is an alumna of St. Andrew’s College of Arts, Science and Commerce in Bandra.

After drawing attention in a Parker Pen commercial with Amitabh Bachchan, D’Souza began acting in 2003 with the Hindi film Tujhe Meri Kasam, the Tamil film Boys (in which she was credited as Harini) and the Telugu film Satyam. She appeared in Masti (2004) and built a substantial following in Telugu cinema before her breakthrough with the blockbuster Bommarillu (2006), which won her a Filmfare Award South and a Nandi Award. Its Tamil remake Santosh Subramaniam (2008) repeated that success, and the same year she played Aditi in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, her defining Hindi role. She made her Malayalam debut as the warrior princess Ayesha in Urumi (2011), for which she won the Asiavision Award for Best Actress, and starred opposite John Abraham in the action film Force (2011).

D’Souza married actor Riteish Deshmukh on 3 February 2012 and took a long break from acting; the couple have two sons, Riaan (born 2014) and Rahyl (born 2016). Now credited as Genelia Deshmukh, she returned to full-time acting in 2022 with Mister Mummy and made her Marathi debut in Ved, the highest-grossing Marathi film of that year and the source of a Filmfare Award Marathi nomination for Best Actress. She followed with Trial Period (2023) and, in 2025, appeared opposite Aamir Khan in Sitaare Zameen Par, in the film Junior and in a cameo in Mastiii 4. She next stars in her co-production Raja Shivaji. Her honours include a Filmfare Award South, two Nandi Awards, two IIFA Awards and three Maharashtracha Favourite Kon? Awards.
