Career Overview

Govinda made his film debut in Ilzaam (1986) and went on to appear in more than 120 Hindi-language films. He was one of the leading stars of the late 1980s and 1990s, known for his slapstick comedy and dancing, and for a long run of hits made with director David Dhawan. After a slump in the early 2000s he returned with Bhagam Bhag (2006), Partner (2007) and Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty (2014). In 1999 he was voted the tenth-greatest star of stage or screen in a BBC News Online poll, and in 2015 he joined Zee TV’s Dance India Dance Super Moms as a judge.

Political Career

Govinda was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Mumbai North constituency of Maharashtra in the 2004 general election as an Indian National Congress candidate, taking the seat from Ram Naik. He served as a Member of Parliament from 10 May 2004 to 16 May 2009 and was succeeded by Sanjay Nirupam. In March 2024, ahead of that year’s general election, he joined the Shiv Sena.
