Jimmy Shergill Biography

Jimmy Sheirgill (born Jasjit Singh Gill; 3 December 1970), also credited as Jimmy Shergill, is an Indian actor and producer who works primarily in Hindi and Punjabi films. He was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, into a Punjabi Sikh family. He studied at St. Francis’ College in Lucknow, moved to Punjab in 1985, and attended The Punjab Public School in Nabha and Bikram College at Punjabi University, Patiala, before completing his graduation at Post Graduate Government College-11, Chandigarh, affiliated to Panjab University. He later changed the spelling of his surname from Shergill to Sheirgill.

He began his film career in 1996 with Gulzar’s thriller Maachis and gained wider visibility with Mohabbatein (2000). Over the following two decades he built a career mixing mainstream Hindi films with character-driven roles, including Haasil (2003), Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), A Wednesday! (2008), Tanu Weds Manu (2011) and its 2015 sequel, Special 26 (2013), Mukkabaaz (2018) and De De Pyaar De (2019). He headlined the Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster series, which ran to three films between 2011 and 2018, and remains a leading figure in Punjabi cinema, where he won a PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Actor for Mel Karade Rabba.

On streaming and television he has appeared in Rangbaaz Phirse (2019), Your Honor (from 2020), Choona (2023) and Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond (2024). Recent film work includes Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba (2024), Maa Jaye (2025) and Magical Wallet (2026), in which he plays Rajveer. He married Priyanka Puri in 2001; the couple have a son, Veer.
