Kajol (born Kajol Mukherjee on 5 August 1974 in Bombay, now Mumbai) is an Indian actress who works in Hindi cinema. She is the daughter of the actress Tanuja and the director-producer Shomu Mukherjee and belongs to the Mukherjee–Samarth film family; her younger sister, Tanishaa Mukerji, is also an actress. She was educated at St. Joseph’s Convent School in Panchgani and left school at sixteen to act full time.
Kajol made her debut in Bekhudi (1992) and found commercial success with Baazigar (1993) and Yeh Dillagi (1994). Leading roles in the top-grossing romances Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) established her as one of the biggest stars of the decade, while Gupt: The Hidden Truth (1997) and Dushman (1998) drew critical praise for darker roles. After Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) she took a sabbatical and has worked intermittently since, winning further Filmfare Best Actress awards for Fanaa (2006) and My Name Is Khan (2010). Dilwale (2015) is her highest-grossing release. She has won six Filmfare Awards in total — a record-tying five for Best Actress and one for Best Performance in a Negative Role — and received the Padma Shri in 2011.
She made her debut as a producer with the Marathi period drama Vitti Dandu (2014), which won Best Marathi Film at the Screen Awards. Her more recent work includes the Netflix film Tribhanga (2021), Salaam Venky (2022), the Disney+ Hotstar legal drama series The Trial (2023), Do Patti (2024), the horror film Maa (2025) and the JioHotstar thriller Sarzameen (2025). She is next set to lead the action film Maharagni: Queen of Queens. In 2025 she received the Raj Kapoor Special Contribution Award at the Maharashtra State Film Awards. Kajol married the actor Ajay Devgn on 24 February 1999; the couple live in Mumbai and have two children, Nysa and Yug.
