Ranaut made her film debut in the 2006 thriller Gangster, which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, and drew praise for emotionally intense roles in Woh Lamhe… (2006), Life in a… Metro (2007) and Fashion (2008), the last of which brought her the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. After commercial successes in Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009) and Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), her comic turn in Tanu Weds Manu (2011) was well received. She played a mutant in the superhero film Krrish 3 (2013), one of the highest-grossing Indian films, and then won two consecutive National Film Awards for Best Actress — for Queen (2014) and for a dual role in Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015). Her performances in her co-directorial Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019) and in Panga (2020) jointly earned her a fourth National Film Award. In 2020 she launched her production company, Manikarnika Films. Her second directorial, the biographical drama Emergency (2025), in which she portrayed Indira Gandhi, was released in January 2025.

Political Career

Ranaut is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. She contested the 2024 general election from the Mandi constituency in Himachal Pradesh and has served as its Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha since 4 June 2024, succeeding Pratibha Singh. In 2020 the Government of India honoured her with the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award.
