Laya Biography
Laya is an Indian actress and Kuchipudi dancer known for her work primarily in Telugu films, with further credits in Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil cinema. She was born on 21 October 1981 into a Telugu family in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh; her maiden name is Gorty. Her father was a doctor and her mother taught music at Nirmala High School, Vijayawada, where Laya studied and where she was a state-level chess player.
She first appeared on screen as a child artist in Bhadram Koduko (1992) and moved into lead roles with Swayamvaram (1999) after finishing as runner-up in the Star 2000 talent contest. She won three Nandi Awards — a Special Jury Award for Swayamvaram and consecutive Best Actress awards for Manoharam (2000) and Preminchu (2001). Trained in classical dance from a young age, she has performed in more than 50 stage shows and later moved to Hyderabad, and she also holds a master’s degree in Computer Applications.
Laya married Dr. Sri Ganesh Gorty in 2006 and settled in Los Angeles, California, where the couple has a daughter and a son. After stepping away from the screen around 2010, she returned to Telugu cinema with Amar Akbar Anthony (2018) and has since appeared in Thammudu (2025) and Sampradayini Suppini Suddapoosani (2026). She has also worked in television, hosting programmes on Gemini TV and ETV.
