Sanjay Mishra Biography

Sanjay Mishra, born 6 October 1963, is an Indian actor known for his work in Hindi cinema and television. He was born in Narayanpur in the Darbhanga district of Bihar, into a Maithil Brahmin family from Sakri. His father, Shambhu Nath Mishra, was an employee of the Press Information Bureau, and both his grandparents were civil servants. When his father was transferred the family moved to Varanasi, where Mishra studied at Kendriya Vidyalaya BHU; he went on to join the National School of Drama in New Delhi, graduating in 1989.

Mishra appeared in commercials and small film roles before his television debut in the historical series Chanakya in 1991, and became widely recognised as the clerk Shukla in the satirical series Office Office from 2000. He built a substantial film career through the 2000s, appearing in Satya (1998), Bunty Aur Babli (2005) and the back-to-back comedy hits Golmaal: Fun Unlimited (2006) and Dhamaal (2007), before gaining nationwide popularity as RGV in All the Best: Fun Begins (2009).

His most acclaimed work has been in independent cinema. He played the protagonist Bauji in Rajat Kapoor’s Ankhon Dekhi (2014), winning the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor, and won the same award a second time for the thriller Vadh (2022). He also drew praise for Masaan (2015), Kadvi Hawa (2017) and Kaamyaab. Mishra has directed the films Pranaam Walekum and Dhama Choukdhi, and voiced Pumbaa in the Hindi-language version of The Lion King (2019). He married Roshni Achreja in 1991 and, following their separation, married Kiran Mishra in 2009; he has two children. His 2025 releases included Badass Ravi Kumar and Durlabh Prasad Ki Dusri Shadi, with Vadh 2 and the Netflix film Kartavya lined up for 2026.
