1970s-80s Madras

During the 1970s and 80s, Madras, presently known as Chennai, was a mixture of advanced and conventional ways of life. The city and its famous sites like the Marina Beach and Fort St George, preserved the old colonial charm and yet allowed for industries to evolve. The culture grew, with the classical forms of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam dance being the most recognizable. Films, and more specifically Tamil movies, captured everything. Education too had growth; institutions such as IIT Madras were coming up. In spite of the advent of modernity, society still remained and clung to traditional value systems and community orientation.
