Career Overview
Dharmendra made his film debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere and went on to appear in more than 300 films across a 65-year career, becoming one of the most commercially successful leading men in Hindi cinema. He starred in landmark films including Phool Aur Patthar (1966), Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971), Seeta Aur Geeta (1972), Sholay (1975) and Chupke Chupke (1975). In 1983 he founded the production company Vijayta Films, which launched his son Sunny Deol in Betaab (1983); the company’s 1990 production Ghayal, also starring Sunny, won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment and seven Filmfare Awards. In his later career he appeared in character roles including Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011) and its sequels, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023). He represented Bikaner, Rajasthan, as a Bharatiya Janata Party Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2012 and, in 1997, received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. Dharmendra died on 24 November 2025 at a hospital in Mumbai, aged 89, following treatment for respiratory issues; he was posthumously conferred the Padma Vibhushan in 2026.
