Scene vs Ramayana Box Office Clash: Who Wins Diwali 2026?
One week to go, and Diwali 2026 has turned into a proper street fight. The Scene vs Ramayana box office clash puts Suriya’s cop thriller right up against Ranbir Kapoor and Yash’s mythological epic. Same festival. One day apart.
Scene comes from Jithu Madhavan, the Aavesham guy, making his Tamil debut. Ramayana: Part 1 comes from Nitesh Tiwari, with a reported ₹4,000 crore budget and IMAX screens lined up. On paper, it’s David vs Goliath.
But paper doesn’t sell tickets in Coimbatore. So kaun jeetega? Honest answer: it depends which map you’re looking at.

Release Dates: What’s Actually Confirmed
Let’s clear the confusion first. Older reports still say both films open on the same day. They don’t.
Ramayana: Part 1, November 5, 2026. The makers announced the worldwide date on social media on October 11, as Outlook India reported. The film arrives “across all premium formats”, IMAX included. It’s out in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
Scene, November 6, 2026. Suriya locked this one himself on X: “In cinemas from 6th Nov 2026. #Deepavali2026.” Telangana Today carried the IANS report on the worldwide release.
So why the mix-up? Back on September 10, Hollywood Reporter India and Eastern Eye both said Sony Pictures had confirmed Ramayana for November 6. That meant a same-day collision. The October announcement then pulled Ramayana a day earlier.
Net result: Ramayana gets a Thursday start, and Scene walks in on Friday. In festival week, that one-day head start matters.
A few more things to keep on your radar:
- Paid previews on November 4? Pinkvilla reported them, via Outlook. The makers haven’t confirmed anything.
- Advance booking: the makers said bookings would open on Dussehra. Their announcement didn’t give a date.
- Scene’s certificate: a DT Next headline says Scene got a U/A.
Scene vs Ramayana: Genre, Scale and Hype
These two films barely belong in the same sentence. Chalk and cheese, boss.
Scene: Jithu Madhavan’s first Tamil film
Scene started life as Suriya47. It’s a Tamil cop thriller, and Suriya plays a cop named Inbaraj. Hollywood Reporter India and Eastern Eye both describe an unconventional cop with 900 criminal arrests. That’s a fun number to build a mass hero around.
The crew list is the real flex. Jithu Madhavan made Romancham and Aavesham, and Sushin Shyam does the music. Vineeth Augustian handles the camera and Ajmal Sabu edits. Suriya’s new banner, Zhagaram Studios, produces with 2D Entertainment, and Jyotika co-produces.
The sources don’t fully agree on cast. Nazriya Nazim, Naslen and Anandaraj show up everywhere. Telangana Today also names John Vijay. Fahadh Faasil, Lal and Raj Priyan are reportedly on board too, per the September reports.
Ramayana: Part 1: the event film
Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana is the first half of a two-part epic. Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita and Yash plays Ravana. Sunny Deol is Hanuman and Ravie Dubey is Lakshman. Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Rakul Preet Singh, Vivek Oberoi and Kunal Kapoor round out the cast.
Then there’s the money. Hollywood Reporter India puts the budget at ₹4,000 crore. Treat that as a reported figure, not an official one.
Our Ramayana Part 1 tracker has every cast and date update so far. The bigger question hasn’t changed, though: can Tiwari avoid the Adipurush mistakes?
The hype gap
Different kinds of hype, basically. Scene’s buzz runs on director cred and Suriya’s fan base. Ramayana’s buzz is pure event, with five languages and IMAX behind it.
One needs good reviews to grow. The other just needs to show up.
Screens and Markets: Tamil Nadu and Kerala vs the Hindi Belt
Here’s where the Scene vs Ramayana box office clash really gets decided. Not on X. On screen counts.
Nobody has published screen numbers yet. The closest thing to a market read comes from m9.news, and it’s interesting. The outlet says Scene “could take up a significant number of screens across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.” It calls getting enough screens the biggest challenge for Ramayana.
m9.news goes a step further. It claims interest in Lord Rama runs weaker in Tamil Nadu, and it points to a belief that the state has a tradition of Ravana worship. That’s the outlet’s take, not a verified fact. And remember, Ramayana releases in Tamil too.
The Telugu side looks crowded as well. According to m9.news, Venkatesh and Trivikram’s Adarsha Kutumbam opens October 30 and could hold screens into its second weekend. Smaller Telugu films Summer Holidays, Itlu Arjuna and Hatah want shows too. Jailer 2 could stay strong, and Godzilla could compete in India and overseas.
Our market-by-market read (opinion only, no tracking data exists yet):
| Market | Edge | Why we think so |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | Scene | Suriya’s home turf; m9.news expects Scene to grab a big share of screens |
| Kerala | Scene | Malayalam director (Romancham, Aavesham), plus Nazriya and Naslen in the cast |
| Hindi belt | Ramayana | Ranbir-led epic with a Hindi release; our sources show no Hindi push for Scene |
| Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | Ramayana, but squeezed | The Telugu version helps, but Adarsha Kutumbam may hold screens |
| Karnataka | Ramayana | Yash as Ravana, plus a Kannada version |
| Overseas | Ramayana | Worldwide release in premium formats; Godzilla is the bigger threat there |
Suriya’s 2026 Momentum vs the Ramayana Event Factor
Suriya isn’t walking in cold. Both September 10 reports framed Scene as Suriya riding his 2026 releases, Karuppu and Vishwanath and Sons. Hollywood Reporter India adds that he’s attached to a TJ Gnanavel project under Hombale Films. The man is busy.
Ramayana doesn’t run on star momentum the same way. It runs on scale. Event films tend to open big almost by default. Mid-scale thrillers usually need word of mouth to build from Friday to Sunday.
That’s the real contrast. Ramayana’s ceiling is huge, but so is the pressure. With a reported ₹4,000 crore riding on it, a “decent” opening won’t feel decent. Scene can win just by being good.
Other Diwali Releases Fighting for Screens
The Scene vs Ramayana box office clash isn’t a two-horse race in Tamil Nadu. DT Next lists three more Tamil Deepavali releases, with dates of November 5 or 6:
- Mookuthi Amman 2: Nayanthara stars, Sundar C directs and Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi scores. It’s also coming in Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. m9.news reports a November 6 date.
- Appa Kutti: Vijay Antony leads, with M. Maran directing.
- Moon Walk: Prabhudheva stars, Manoj Nirmala Sridharan directs, and A. R. Rahman composes. DT Next calls it the Prabhudheva-Rahman reunion after about 25 years.
Our dark horse? Mookuthi Amman 2. A Nayanthara sequel in five languages could quietly steal family shows from both big names.
Want the whole month mapped out? Our November 2026 releases list has it.
Who Wins the Scene vs Ramayana Box Office Clash? Our Verdict
Quick disclaimer: no collections exist yet. Everything below is our opinion.
- Worldwide total: Ramayana, and it’s not close. A worldwide release in five languages, IMAX and a Thursday start. Scene isn’t built to chase that number.
- Tamil Nadu: Scene, if the reviews land. Suriya plus a Jithu Madhavan film on home turf is hard to bet against.
- Kerala: Scene, narrowly. Kerala knows this crew very well.
- Hindi belt and overseas: Ramayana, all day.
So who “wins”? Ramayana takes the headline number. Scene takes the fight Suriya fans actually care about. Both can come out as hits, and for theatres, that’s the best-case Diwali.
The one twist to watch: Ramayana’s Tamil version. If it opens well in Chennai, m9.news’s “weaker Rama interest” theory falls apart fast.
Which Should You Watch First?
Paisa Vasool tip, straight up: watch Ramayana first, and watch it in IMAX or the best premium screen near you. A spectacle film on a regular screen is half a ticket wasted.
Then catch Scene with a loud crowd, ideally in Tamil Nadu or Kerala. A cop thriller hits harder when the hall is whistling with you.
Suriya loyalist in Chennai? Ignore all of the above and book Scene’s first show on Friday. You were going to anyway.
Two films, two moods, one very expensive Deepavali week. Which ticket are you booking first?
