Diwali 2026 Tamil Movies: Which One Should You Watch First?
No Rajinikanth. No Kamal Haasan. No Vijay, no Ajith. The Diwali 2026 Tamil movies lineup has none of the big four, and that’s exactly why this festival feels wide open.
What you get instead is a proper mixed bag. Nayanthara returns as a goddess. Suriya plays a cop for a director making his Tamil debut. Prabhudheva gets A R Rahman’s music again, and Vijay Antony goes the father-daughter route. DT Next has the Tamil releases landing across Nov 5 and 6.
Then Ramayana walks in from the Hindi side, eyeing the same window. So forget “what’s releasing.” The real question is which ticket you book first.
We’ve got a pick for every mood further down. (Missing Thalapathy this Diwali? Our ranking of the best Thalapathy Vijay movies should cover the gap.)
Diwali 2026 Tamil Movies at a Glance
| Film | Lead star | Director | Genre | Reported release |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mookuthi Amman 2 | Nayanthara | Sundar C | Devotional fantasy | Nov 6 |
| Scene | Suriya | Jithu Madhavan | Crime thriller | Nov 6 |
| Moon Walk | Prabhudheva | Manoj Nirmala Sridharan | Dance and music drama | Nov 5-6 window |
| Appa Kutty | Vijay Antony | M. Maran | Family action drama | Nov 5-6 window |
A quick word on those dates. DT Next only says “Nov 5 and 6” for the Tamil slate and doesn’t pin each film to a day. The Nov 6 dates for Mookuthi Amman 2 and Scene come from separate reports. Treat Moon Walk and Appa Kutty as somewhere in that two-day window until the makers lock it.
One more oddity. DT Next’s headline promises four Tamil films, but its list names only three. Scene is the missing one, so we’ve added it back. Also, you’ll see Vijay Antony’s film spelt “Appa Kutti” in some places. We’re going with Appa Kutty.
Mookuthi Amman 2: Nayanthara Goes Double
Nayanthara is back as the goddess she first played in the 2020 film. This time she pulls double duty.
Her second role is a police officer, and not the fearless kind. Hollywood Reporter India describes the cop as haunted by unseen sights and scared of everyday situations. For an actor whose whole screen image runs on control, that’s a fun flip.
Regina Cassandra and Duniya Vijay play the villains. They’re supernatural antagonists who arrive on Earth, threaten ordinary people and keep growing their power.
The team behind it:
- Director: Sundar C, who co-wrote the screenplay with Venkat Raghavan
- Music: Hiphop Tamizha Aadhi
- Producer: Ishari K. Ganesh through Vels Film International, with Rowdy Pictures and Avni Cinemax
- Supporting cast: Urvashi, Yogi Babu, Myna Nandhini, Abhinaya and more
The trailer dropped on Oct 21. The makers are also taking the teaser, Rise of Mahasakthi, into Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. They clearly want reach beyond Tamil Nadu.
Paisa Vasool Ya Time Waste? On paper, it looks like Paisa Vasool for families. Sequels can stumble, sure. But a goddess-versus-demons fantasy at Diwali is about as festival-friendly as Tamil cinema gets.
Scene: Suriya Plays a Cop With an Edge
Here’s the one thriller in the slate. Suriya plays DSP Inbaraj, and Eastern Eye calls Scene a Tamil crime thriller about an unconventional police officer.
What makes it interesting is who’s behind the camera. Jithu Madhavan makes his Tamil directorial debut here. Sushin Shyam scores his first Tamil film as composer. Two Tamil debuts on one Suriya project? That’s a gamble.
It’s also the kind of gamble that gives a big star a fresh look.
The cast around him is stacked: Nazriya Nazim, Naslen, Anandraj, Lal and Raj Priyan. Jyotika and Suriya produce through 2D Entertainment, with Zhagaram Studios. Reports put the worldwide release on Nov 6.
Paisa Vasool Ya Time Waste? Our gut says Paisa Vasool. Of all the Diwali 2026 Tamil movies, this one has the most “unknown factor.” That’s precisely the appeal.
Moon Walk: Prabhudheva and A R Rahman Reunite
This one’s for the music people. Moon Walk brings A R Rahman and Prabhudheva together again after nearly 25 years.
Manoj Nirmala Sridharan directs. DT Next says the film focuses on dance and music, which is exactly what you’d hope for from that pairing.
Beyond that, details stay thin. No story beats, no confirmed single release day. That’s a little worrying this close to Diwali.
Paisa Vasool Ya Time Waste? Too early to say. If the songs land before release, this could quietly become the festival’s sleeper. If they don’t, it’ll struggle for attention next to a Suriya film and a Nayanthara sequel.
Appa Kutty: Vijay Antony’s Smaller Bet
Every festival has one film that runs on word of mouth. This year it’s probably Appa Kutty.
Vijay Antony leads, and M. Maran directs. DT Next describes it as a mix of action, emotion and family sentiment built around a father-daughter bond.
Nobody’s going to call it the big Diwali event. That’s fine. Small family dramas often find their audience in the second week, once the opening-weekend noise dies down.
Paisa Vasool Ya Time Waste? Hold your verdict. Watch the first-day reactions and decide then.
Ramayana vs the Diwali 2026 Tamil Movies: Who Gets the Screens?
Now for the elephant in the multiplex. Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana stars Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The makers plan it as a two-part film.
The date depends on who you ask. DT Next lists Ramayana for Nov 5. Eastern Eye, citing Sony Pictures, reports Ramayana: Part 1 for Nov 6 worldwide. That’s the same day as Scene. Eastern Eye also reports a budget of Rs 4,000 crore.
So yes, the clash looks real. Multiplex shows on Nov 6 will be a tug-of-war. Tamil films will have to fight for prime slots in cities where Hindi releases pull big crowds.
Curious whether Tiwari can avoid the Adipurush trap? We broke that down in Ramayana vs Adipurush. And if you want Ravana from the actor himself, read our Yash interview on Ramayana.
Which Diwali 2026 Tamil Movie Should You Watch First?
None of these films has released yet, so this is an expectations call, not a review. Pick by mood:
- Family outing, grandparents included: Mookuthi Amman 2
- You want a tense, grown-up thriller: Scene
- You’re here for the songs and the dancing: Moon Walk
- You don’t mind a good cry: Appa Kutty
- Mythology on the biggest screen you can find: Ramayana
Our first booking? Scene. A Suriya cop film with a director and a composer both new to Tamil cinema is the most exciting bet on this slate. Mookuthi Amman 2 comes a close second, and it’s the safer choice if the whole family is tagging along.
Here’s the thing, though. With no superstar film this year, nobody has the winner locked in advance. Audiences will settle it in theatres. Will Nayanthara’s goddess outdraw Suriya’s cop? We’ll find out soon enough. Whichever wins will have to fight for a spot on our list of the highest-grossing South Indian movies of 2026.
So, which one are you booking first?
