Bollywood Cinematic Universes Explained: Watch Order Guide
Bollywood cinematic universes have quietly turned movie night into homework. Want to watch Alpha? Someone will tell you to start with a Tiger film from 2012. Planning a Thamma rewatch? You’d better know who Jana is. And the Singham crowd has its own five-film syllabus.
So here’s the cheat sheet. Every major universe on one page, in order, with the films you can skip, where they stream in India and what’s actually next. No stale 2024 rumours. This is the state of play as of 30 September 2026.
Quick spoiler for the impatient. One universe is running out of steam. One is sitting on a huge queue of announced sequels. And one hasn’t released a film since 2024. Guess which is which before you scroll.
What are Bollywood cinematic universes, really?
A cinematic universe is a group of films where characters and storylines cross between separate franchises. A plain sequel doesn’t count. The tell is the crossover: a hero from one film walking into another, or a character you already love popping up where you least expect them.
Hindi cinema has three proper ones right now:
- YRF Spy Universe: seven films since 2012, all about agents and missions.
- Maddock Horror Comedy Universe: five released films since 2018, plus a long list of announced ones.
- Rohit Shetty’s Cop Universe: five films since 2011, built around police heroes.
Why did Bollywood cinematic universes take off? Money, mostly. Stree 2 dropped a Bhediya cameo into its story and finished at about Rs 874.58 crore worldwide. It became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024 and the seventh highest-grossing Hindi film ever. Crossovers give fans a reason to book day one tickets, if only to catch who shows up.
The catch? Fatigue. A universe only works while each film stands on its own legs. When one doesn’t, the whole brand wobbles. You’ll see exactly that in the YRF numbers below.
Two more universes on this page aren’t Bollywood at all: the Tamil Lokesh Cinematic Universe and the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe. They’re here because they come up in every “which universe is best” argument, and Mahavatar released in Hindi too.

YRF Spy Universe: watch order, must-watch and what’s next
YRF’s spy world began with one agent, Tiger, in 2012. Of all the Bollywood cinematic universes, it’s the biggest earner by a mile. Fourteen years in, it has seven films, two franchises stitched together and, lately, a box office problem.

Do you need to watch Ek Tha Tiger before Pathaan?
Depends how deep you want to go.
If you just want the headline act, start with Pathaan. This magicpin guide to the YRF Spy Universe recommends the full run from Ek Tha Tiger. But it also singles out Pathaan as the film that openly ties the universe together. That makes it the easiest door in.
If you want Tiger 3 to hit properly, don’t skip the early Tiger films. Tiger’s marriage and his son both happen between the first and second movies. Walk into Tiger 3 cold and you’ll spend half of it confused.
War matters too. It introduces Kabir, Hrithik Roshan’s agent. Pathaan and Tiger 3 later pull the Tiger and Kabir threads into one story.
The core five: Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, Tiger 3.
Optional extras: War 2 and Alpha. Watch them if you’re a completist, or if your Netflix subscription is already running anyway.
Paisa Vasool verdict: Pathaan is your entry ticket. The core five make a solid weekend binge. Alpha? Mostly time waste, unless you’re going in for Alia Bhatt. Our full Alpha movie review breaks down where it goes wrong.
Is the YRF Spy Universe running out of steam?
Look at the curve.
- Pathaan: about Rs 1,050.50 crore on a Rs 250 crore budget.
- Tiger 3: about Rs 466.63 crore on a Rs 280 crore budget.
- War 2: about Rs 303-351 crore on a budget of Rs 300-400 crore.
- Alpha: about Rs 98.62 crore worldwide, with Rs 68.72 crore of that from India.
That’s a steep slide in under four years.
On paper, Alpha had a fresh hook. It’s the first female-led film in the universe, with Alia Bhatt and Sharvari up front and Bobby Deol as the villain. But the release date kept moving. It slipped from Christmas 2025 to 17 April 2026, then finally landed on 3 July 2026. Reviews came in mixed to negative, with just 26% from 19 critics on Rotten Tomatoes. It reached Netflix on 28 August 2026.
Then came the real shock. The long-teased Tiger vs Pathaan crossover is off. YRF shelved it in February 2026 over budget constraints, according to Wikipedia’s YRF Spy Universe page. Pathaan 2 is in development, with no date yet.
Some watch-order sites still list Tiger vs Pathaan as a 2026 release. Ignore them. They haven’t caught up.
My take: this universe peaked the day Pathaan opened, and every film since has had to fight that number. A Pathaan 2 that works as a standalone movie could turn things around. Another film that leans only on the brand name won’t.
Maddock Horror Comedy Universe order and cameo map
YRF is the universe everybody argues about. Among Bollywood cinematic universes, though, Maddock’s is the one that crept up on all of us. It started in 2018 with one oddball horror-comedy. Now it has five films, a character who shows up in every single one, and more announced projects than any other universe on this page.

Fun detail: Stree 2 originally had a 30 August 2024 date before it moved up to 15 August. That Independence Day slot clearly didn’t hurt.
How Stree, Bhediya, Munjya and Thamma connect
This is where Maddock gets clever. The links run like this:
- Jana, played by Abhishek Banerjee, appears in every film. He’s the universe’s thread.
- Stree characters turn up in Bhediya.
- Bhediya characters make a cameo in Munjya.
- Stree 2 brings Varun Dhawan’s Bhediya into a full crossover.
- Thamma links everything together.
So yes, Thamma is very much connected to Stree and Bhediya. It stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Varun Dhawan and Abhishek Banerjee both drop in for cameos.
Must-watch minimum and where to stream
This is the one universe where I’d honestly say watch everything. Five films, and each one works on its own.
Short on time? Do Stree, Bhediya, Stree 2 and Thamma. Munjya is the one people skip. Don’t, though. Maha Munjya is on the announced list, so you’ll need it eventually.
For streaming, Thamma arrived on Prime Video on 16 December 2025. The streaming homes for the older four shift often, so search your apps before you plan the binge.
Paisa Vasool verdict: The best starting point among Bollywood cinematic universes. Start with Stree. If it clicks, you’re in for the long haul.
One worry, though. Thamma made about Rs 169.75 crore on a Rs 145 crore budget. That’s roughly a fifth of what Stree 2 pulled in. Not a flop, but not the victory lap a universe-linking film should be.
What’s next for Maddock
The slate is huge. Shakti Shalini is in post-production and expected in December 2026 or January 2027. Bhediya 2 is in pre-production for 2027. Stree 3 has a script ready. There’s also Chamunda, Chhoti Stree, Maha Munjya, a Thamma spin-off and a two-part finale. You’ll find the full status list in the calendar further down. Rohit Shetty Cop Universe order and where to watch

||
Release order is the simplest way in. Five films, top to bottom.
Simmba is the universe’s top earner at about Rs 400.19 crore. Singham Again cost the most, somewhere between Rs 350 and 375 crore. It brought in about Rs 367-389.64 crore. For the priciest film in the franchise, that’s a thin return.
Singham Again has streamed on Prime Video since 27 December 2024. For the other four, check your apps; platform deals change.
What’s next? Simmba 2 and Sooryavanshi 2 are in the works, with no dates. So no Cop Universe film has hit theatres since November 2024. That’s nearly two years of silence.
Paisa Vasool verdict: Start with Singham. If the style works for you, the rest will too. If it doesn’t, stop there and save your weekend.
Other Indian cinematic universes worth knowing
Not every universe in these debates is Bollywood. These two come up constantly, so here’s the short version.
Lokesh Cinematic Universe: Tamil, not Bollywood
Is the LCU part of Bollywood? No. It’s a Tamil universe. The order so far:
- Kaithi (25 Oct 2019)
- Vikram (3 Jun 2022)
- Leo (19 Oct 2023)
Benz and Kaithi 2 are on the way, but neither has a date. Start with Kaithi, subtitles on.
Mahavatar Cinematic Universe
This is the only animated universe on the list, and its ambition is wild. Mahavatar Narsimha released on 25 July 2025 in Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam at the same time. That’s textbook pan-India film strategy. It made about Rs 300-325 crore worldwide and became the highest-grossing Indian animated film. Kleem Productions made it with Hombale Films.
The plan is a new film every two years until 2037:
- Mahavatar Parshuram (2027)
- Mahavatar Raghunandan (2029)
- Mahavatar Dwarkadhish (2031)
- Mahavatar Gokulananda (2033)
- Mahavatar Kalki Part I (2035)
- Mahavatar Kalki Part II (2037)
A 12-year roadmap in Indian cinema? Bold. We’ll believe the 2037 date when we see the teaser.
You’ll also spot names like PVCU, HIT and Lokah on other universe lists. We’ve kept this guide to the five we could check properly.
Where to stream Bollywood cinematic universes in India
Here’s the platform split, based on current listings:
- Netflix: Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, Tiger 3, War 2, Alpha
- Prime Video: War, Pathaan, Thamma, Singham Again
Paying for just one app? Netflix covers five of the seven YRF films. Prime Video has the other two, plus the latest Maddock and Cop Universe entries. If you’re weighing a subscription, our guide to the best OTT platforms in India for 2026 compares plans and prices.
Which universe should you start with?
Straight verdicts, ranked for a first-timer:
- Maddock Horror Comedy Universe. Start with Stree. Easiest entry, most fun, and the cameo payoffs actually land. Paisa vasool.
- YRF Spy Universe. Start with Pathaan, then go back to Ek Tha Tiger if you’re hooked. Save Alpha for the very end.
- Rohit Shetty Cop Universe. Start with Singham. Very much a taste thing.
- Mahavatar Cinematic Universe. One film, zero homework. Low risk.
- Lokesh Cinematic Universe. Start with Kaithi. Worth it if subtitles don’t bother you.

Already out, in case you missed them: Alpha (3 July 2026) and Thamma (21 October 2025).
The universe that wins the next five years
Here’s my bet. The winner won’t be the universe with the loudest crossover or the longest slate. It’ll be the one whose next film still works for someone who has never seen the last one.
Stree pulled that off in 2018. Pathaan pulled it off in 2023. Alpha didn’t, and the numbers show it.
Bollywood cinematic universes are only as strong as their weakest new entry. So which one are you still invested in: Maddock, YRF, or the Cop gang? Pick your side, then go start that binge tonight.
