Best Free OTT Platforms in India: MX vs TVF vs JioHotstar
Free ka maal kisko nahi chahiye? The catch: the best free OTT platforms in India in 2026 aren’t the same apps they were two years ago. Most “top 10 free apps” lists online still haven’t noticed.
Amazon miniTV doesn’t exist as its own app anymore. MX Player is folding into Prime Video. JioHotstar’s free side works more like a trailer for its paid plans. And that “watch Aspirants free” tip your cousin forwarded on WhatsApp? It doesn’t hold up.
So we did the boring part for you. We checked what each app actually gives you for zero rupees, where the ads come in, and the exact point where paying a little starts making sense. Verdict first, details after.
Best free OTT platforms in India: the quick verdict
- Amazon MX Player (now inside Prime Video): the clear winner. It has the biggest free originals slate, needs no subscription, and its free tab needs no sign-up.
- TVF Play: free and ad-supported, but mostly older seasons. Perfect if you missed the TVF classics the first time.
- JioHotstar free tier: limited catch-up TV, a few shows and some live matches. Handy, but not a full platform.
| Platform | Cost | Ads | Video quality | Best free pull | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon MX Player | Free, no subscription | Yes | Amazon doesn’t publish it | Raktanchal, Ek Badnaam Aashram, Bhaukaal | Paisa vasool |
| TVF Play | Free | Yes | Not published | Older TVF seasons | Good for catch-up |
| JioHotstar (free tier) | Free tier; paid plans from Rs 79/month | Yes | Not published for the free tier | Catch-up TV, some live matches | A teaser, not a meal |
One thing no list can honestly give you is an ad count. None of these services publishes how many ads you’ll sit through. So if a website “rates” ad load with a neat number, ask where it got that number.
What “free” really means on Indian OTT
Here’s the first rule of the best free OTT platforms in India: free means ad-supported. You pay with your time, not your UPI.
GrabOn’s August 2026 roundup of free OTT platforms sums up the pattern well. On most Indian apps, ad-free viewing sits behind a paid plan or a telecom bundle. The free version is the version with breaks.
Telecom bundles can also flip a “paid” app to free. Airtel Xstream Play, for example, bundles 200+ free live TV channels for Airtel users. Before you subscribe to anything, open your mobile plan’s benefits page. You might already have something.
And remember the difference between a free platform and a free tier. A free platform is built around ads. A free tier is a paid app letting you peek inside. Sony LIV gives you free live sports and selected episodes. Zee5’s limited free tier leans on regional content. Both are useful, but neither replaces a real free service.
Amazon MX Player: the free OTT app that’s becoming Prime Video
Quick history lesson, because this confuses everyone. Amazon miniTV launched in May 2021. It merged with MX Player in 2024 and became Amazon MX Player. Amazon puts its user base at about 250 million in India.
Then 2026 shook things up again. In May, Amazon announced it would integrate MX Player into Prime Video, and the rollout began on 16 July. Here’s what that means for you:
- Free to Me tab: non-Prime users get MX’s free, ad-supported content in a “Free to Me” tab inside the Prime Video app. No sign-up needed.
- New Android name: the Android app now goes by “MX Player by Prime Video,” with an option to sign up for Prime.
- iOS, web and TV: Amazon is moving these users over to Prime Video in phases.
- Your stuff stays: watch history, watchlists and preferences carry over.
So “Amazon miniTV vs MX Player” isn’t a real fight anymore. They’re the same service, now living under the Prime Video roof. The rebrand is still settling, so check your Play Store listing if your app looks different from your friend’s.
What’s actually worth watching for free
Amazon lists web series, reality shows, mini-movies, short films, TV shows, movies and Amazon Originals in the mix. The slate counts over 100 new shows. For a closer look at what’s coming, see our rundown of Amazon MX Player’s 2026 content slate.
The originals are the real reason to bother. Amazon names these among them:
- Raktanchal
- Ek Badnaam Aashram
- Bhaukaal
- Campus Diaries
- Jamnapaar
- Half CA
- Dehati Ladke
- Who’s Your Gynac
- Sixer
- Hip Hop India
- Hunter – Tootega Nahi Todega
Raktanchal Season 3 premiered on Amazon MX Player on 16 July. If you want one binge to start with, that’s the obvious pick. Three seasons deep, it’s MX’s own, and it hasn’t run out of steam.
Then there’s MX Vdesi, which carries international shows dubbed into Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. K-drama in Hindi, zero rupees. Not bad at all.
What about video quality? Amazon doesn’t publish a resolution for MX’s free content. So ignore any list that confidently promises “free 1080p” here.
Verdict: Paisa vasool. Literally zero paisa. Of all the best free OTT platforms in India, this is the one to install first.
TVF Play: free, but mostly the older seasons
TVF Play is free with ads, and GrabOn calls its library “extensive.” The catch sits in the same sentence: it’s mostly older seasons.
Newer seasons of TVF’s big shows often sit behind Sony LIV’s paywall instead. So TVF Play is brilliant for catch-up and nostalgia. It’s weak if you want the latest season of the show your office group chat won’t stop discussing.
The Aspirants and Kota Factory myth
Let’s bust this one properly. JustWatch’s India listing shows Aspirants on Prime Video (4K) and Prime Video with Ads (HD). It shows Kota Factory only on Netflix. Neither title shows a free option.
So the two TVF shows everyone associates with “free” aren’t free right now, as far as that listing shows. If you want genuinely free originals, MX is where they live.
Verdict: Time pass, not time waste. Just don’t expect the new stuff.
JioHotstar free tier: what you get without paying
Here’s the honest version. JioHotstar’s free side gives you limited catch-up TV and select shows, with ads. It also includes some live match streams.
That’s about it. Most of the catalogue needs a plan. Call it a free tier, not a free platform, and you won’t feel cheated.
It still earns a spot here. If you mostly want yesterday’s serial episode or the odd live match, the free tier might be all you need.
Verdict: A teaser, not a meal. Good enough for TV catch-up, not for a weekend binge.
Head-to-head: catalogue, ads, quality and originals
Put the best free OTT platforms in India side by side, and the gaps get obvious fast.
- Catalogue: MX wins for fresh free originals. TVF Play has depth, but in older seasons. JioHotstar’s free tier is the thinnest of the three.
- Ads: all three run ads, and none publishes how many. Call it a draw, because anyone claiming otherwise is guessing.
- Video quality: none of them publishes a free-tier resolution. If picture quality matters to you, you’re heading towards a paid plan anyway.
- Best originals: MX, easily. Raktanchal, Ek Badnaam Aashram and Bhaukaal give it a lineup the others can’t match for free.
The free apps we didn’t rank
These aren’t in our title fight, but they deserve a mention:
- YouTube: the original free OTT. Our list of hidden gem movies you can watch free on YouTube is a good place to start.
- Crunchyroll: a free anime library, which GrabOn describes as “high-quality anime in HD.” For the full picture, read our best anime streaming platform in India verdict.
- ShemarooMe: classic and regional films, with a paid “Plus” tier on top.
- Sony LIV and Zee5: limited free tiers, covered above.
When paying is actually worth it
Even the best free OTT platforms in India get annoying at some point. If your breaking point is JioHotstar, here’s the price ladder TelecomTalk reported in February 2026:
- Mobile: Rs 79/month, Rs 149/quarter or Rs 499/year. One mobile device, with ads.
- Super: Rs 149/month, Rs 349/quarter or Rs 1,099/year. 1080p, two devices, with ads.
- Premium: Rs 299/month, Rs 699/quarter or Rs 2,199/year. 4K, four devices, and no ads except during live sports and certain live programming.
Now the maths. The yearly Mobile plan at Rs 499 works out to roughly Rs 41.6 a month. That’s close to half of what you’d pay going month to month at Rs 79.
The catch? Mobile doesn’t include Hollywood. That’s an add-on at Rs 49/month, Rs 129/quarter or Rs 399/year. Super and Premium already include it.
Do the sum on a monthly basis. Mobile plus the Hollywood add-on comes to Rs 128. Super costs Rs 149 and gives you Hollywood, 1080p and a second screen. For Rs 21 more, Super is the better deal. Only stay on Mobile if you watch alone, on a phone, and Hollywood doesn’t matter to you.
One honest warning: these are February 2026 figures, and we couldn’t find a newer live source. Confirm the price in the app before you pay.
What about MX? The upgrade path there is Prime itself, since the Android app now offers a Prime sign-up. For how Prime stacks up on price against everyone else, our OTT plans and price guide for 2026 has the full breakdown.
Which free app should you pick?
Choosing between the best free OTT platforms in India really comes down to what you watch.
- You want free, newer originals: Amazon MX Player, through the Free to Me tab in Prime Video.
- You missed TVF’s older seasons: TVF Play.
- You want serial catch-up and the odd live match: JioHotstar’s free tier, then the Mobile plan if you outgrow it.
- You’re an anime fan: Crunchyroll’s free library.
- You’re on Airtel: check Xstream Play before paying anyone.
Here’s our slightly uncomfortable takeaway. In 2026, “free OTT in India” mostly means Amazon. That’s great for your wallet. It’s less great for choice, because one company now controls the best free originals and the paid upgrade sitting right next to them.
Free to Me is a smart name for it. Free, sure. But it’s designed to make you want Prime. So which free app has actually earned a spot on your home screen? Tell us in the comments.
