₹101.10 Cr. One day. That’s the Toxic box office collection day 1 figure that landed on August 27, and Yash’s pan-India swing cleared the ₹100 crore net mark before the opening weekend even began.

Every tracker jumped on the number. Very few explained what it actually bought Yash.

So here’s the full picture, minus the occupancy tables nobody reads.

Toxic box office collection day 1: the headline number

Sacnilk logged ₹101.10 Cr net in India across all languages, from 24,579 shows at 56.1% overall occupancy (Sacnilk Day 1 tracker). India gross came in at ₹120.75 Cr. Worldwide gross touched ₹137 Cr.

That’s a monster opening by any reading. And it’s an A-rated film, which usually caps the family audience and shaves crores off the first day.

Language-wise breakdown: Hindi paid, Kannada roared

Hindi did the heavy lifting in rupee terms. Kannada did it in passion.

  • Hindi: ₹55.00 Cr net, 53.0% occupancy, 16,670 shows
  • Kannada: ₹23.30 Cr net, 89.0% occupancy, 2,031 shows
  • Telugu: ₹16.00 Cr net, 60.0% occupancy
  • Tamil: ₹5.50 Cr net, 42.0% occupancy
  • Malayalam: ₹1.30 Cr net, 61.0% occupancy

Look at that Kannada line again. An 89% occupancy from just 2,031 shows means home turf turned up in full force. Karnataka didn’t just watch Toxic, it owned it.

The Hindi number carries its own record. ₹55 Cr net is the biggest Hindi opening ever for a standalone South film, ahead of Saaho’s ₹24.4 Cr, and second overall behind Pushpa 2’s ₹72 Cr.

Toxic vs Jana Nayagan vs Dhurandhar 2 vs Salaar

Now the comparison everyone argued about on release night.

vs Salaar: Toxic’s ₹101.10 Cr beat Prabhas’ ₹90.7 Cr, making it the second biggest opening day for an A-rated Indian film (Koimoi). It also sits sixth on the all-time India opening-day list across every certificate.

vs Jana Nayagan: not close. Vijay’s film opened to ₹42.70 Cr from 13,067 shows. Toxic more than doubled it. Its legs told a different story, as our Jana Nayagan Day 6 tracker showed.

vs Dhurandhar 2: this is where the internet got it wrong. Dhurandhar 2’s much-quoted ₹145.55 Cr “Day 1” folds in ₹43.00 Cr of paid Day 0 previews. Strip those out and its pure opening day was ₹102.55 Cr. Against Toxic’s ₹101.10 Cr, that’s a photo finish, not a thrashing.

Globally, Koimoi counted ₹139.3 Cr on Day 1, the 11th biggest opening for an Indian film worldwide. It missed the all-time top ten by ₹3.2 Cr.

Why this Day 1 is history for Yash

Here’s the stat that will outlive the weekend. Yash is now the only Indian actor with two separate ₹100 Cr net opening days, after KGF Chapter 2.

Not Prabhas. Not Vijay. Not Shah Rukh.

He pulled it off with an experimental, adults-only character piece rather than a crowd-safe sequel. Ambitious, and risky. He’d already hinted at that appetite for risk in his Ramayana and Toxic interview.

Then the drop came

A record opening buys attention, not a verdict. Five days after release, Toxic was tracking around ₹300 Cr worldwide and ₹220 Cr in India, well short of the pace that ₹101 Cr Day 1 implied. Reviews ran mixed to negative.

The Kannada industry closed ranks anyway. “Every filmmaker and person in the industry wanted Toxic to win,” producer Ravichandra AJ told Hollywood Reporter India. A tracker in the same piece put it plainly: the film’s unusual storytelling “connected with only a relatively small section of the audience.”

Both things are true. Yash sold an unprecedented number of Day 1 tickets on his name alone. The film then struggled to convert that goodwill into repeat viewing.

So, paisa vasool ya time waste?

For the trade, Day 1 was pure paisa vasool. For anyone who booked a ticket on Day 4 expecting a KGF-style high, less so.

My take: this opening proves Yash is now a genuine pan-India draw independent of the KGF brand, which is a bigger deal than any single record. The next film decides whether that holds.
