So the man behind 3 Idiots, PK and Sanju has finally jumped to streaming. This Pritam and Pedro review cuts through the noise: Rajkumar Hirani’s first OTT project dropped on JioHotstar (not Netflix, whatever your feed told you) on 3 July 2026, and it’s a six-episode buddy-cop dramedy set in Goa.

From there the stakes climb. A child-kidnapping investigation pulls the duo deeper, and the series folds in very online crimes: deepfakes, the Blue Whale challenge, blackmail over an affair. It wants to be a cybercrime thriller with a warm comic heart.

Directed by Avinash Arun and created, co-written and produced by Hirani with Abhijat Joshi and Suyash Trivedi, the show runs six episodes. Watch for cameos too. Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani pop up, and Mona Singh plays Stacey Gonsalves.

Here’s the part the trade reviews rush past. Vir Hirani isn’t a random newcomer, and he isn’t a typical star-kid launch either.

He’s in his mid-to-late twenties, and he trained the hard way. He studied acting formally in London, associated with RADA, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. If his face looks faintly familiar, there’s a reason. He appeared as a child in his father’s Munna Bhai M.B.B.S., nicknamed “Short Circuit,” and almost nobody clocked it at the time.

What I respect is the run-up. He skipped the flashy debut for years and trained quietly in theatre first. Pritam and Pedro is his real coming-out, playing the tech-savvy Pritam opposite Warsi.

Does the debut land? That depends entirely on which critic you ask.

Performances: Arshad Warsi and Vir Hirani’s Chemistry

Nobody argues about Warsi. He’s the anchor. Koimoi flat-out calls him “the saving grace,” bringing his signature effortless timing and ironic humour to a role that could’ve gone stale (Koimoi).

The bromance between the two leads is where the show comes alive. Watch how Warsi’s exasperated old-timer plays off Vir’s fast-talking coder, and you can see why even reviewers who hated the writing admit the pairing works. When the two are riffing, the dated plotting fades into the background. It’s the connective tissue holding six wobbly episodes together.

Vir is the fault line. Koimoi is generous, describing his turn as “a highly sincere and confident front” that “doesn’t feel amateurish.” The Quint’s Poulomi Das goes the other way, hard: she writes that “the role gives him nothing to play: no conflict, no edge, no arc,” and that “it shows how flat he remains across six episodes” (The Quint). The Hollywood Reporter India piled on too, flagging an “odd, over-rehearsed diction.”

My read? The writing failed him more than his craft did. Hand a trained RADA actor a character with an arc and this looks like a very different debut. Vikrant Massey, arriving late as antagonist Martin Fonseca, makes an impact precisely because he gets something to chew on.

Pritam and Pedro Review Verdict: Paisa Vasool Ya Time Waste?

Time for the honest scorecard. The critical consensus is mixed-to-negative, and it’s worth seeing the spread rather than one grumpy take.

• Koimoi lands at 3 out of 5, praising the chemistry but calling the social commentary outdated and over-stuffed.
• The Quint calls the cybercrime angle “explained at the level of a school assembly.”
• Hollywood Reporter India is brutal, branding the whole thing “a stunningly dull, bizarrely structured, tonally confused dud.”

The through-line across all three is the same worry: Hirani’s cinema instincts didn’t fully translate to the streaming format. Part of the problem is how the show treats its cyber-threats. The Blue Whale challenge and deepfake-blackmail threads had real potential to unsettle, yet they land like a cautionary school lecture instead of a thriller. That preachy, dated messaging is what drags it down, and it wastes a genuinely current subject that a sharper writers’ room could’ve mined for tension.

So, paisa vasool ya time waste? If you love Hirani’s warmth and want to watch a real star being born, it earns its runtime. If you came for a taut, modern cybercrime thriller, you’ll fidget by episode three. Somewhere in the middle sits a decent weekend watch with a great lead pair and a shaky script.
