Spider-Man: Brand New Day vs The Odyssey Box Office India
Two Hollywood giants landed in Indian theatres two weeks apart, and the Spider-Man: Brand New Day vs The Odyssey box office India race turned into a rout almost immediately. Tom Holland’s film hit ₹300 crore net in six days. No Hollywood release had ever done that here.
Nolan’s epic? It took sixteen days to reach roughly ₹140–144 crore net.
Sounds settled. It isn’t, really. One film dumped everything into a monster opening weekend. The other was still adding shows in week three. And if your ticket budget only stretches to one big screen outing this month, the collection charts won’t tell you where to spend it.
So let’s put both films through the same set of questions.

Read that table twice and you’ll spot the trick most trade reports skip. The two totals come from completely different day-counts. Spider-Man’s figure is six days old. The Odyssey’s is sixteen. Comparing them flat is how you end up with a misleading headline. (If that distinction interests you, our explainer on how box office collection is calculated in India unpacks why no two trackers ever agree.)
Spider-Man: Brand New Day vs The Odyssey Box Office India: What the Numbers Actually Show
Spider-Man’s opening day was a freak event. ₹60.60 crore net. That makes it the first non-Indian film to open above ₹60 crore net in this country, and distributors backed it with 5,000-plus screens — the widest Hollywood rollout India has ever given a single title. We broke that day down separately in our Spider-Man: Brand New Day India box office day 1 verdict.
Then it kept going. ₹200 crore gross in three days. ₹302.5 crore net by day 6, against ₹356.94 crore gross. Avengers: Endgame needed ten days to hit ₹300 crore net; Spidey did it in six, as Koimoi’s day-6 tracking confirms.
The really telling number is the drop. Day 6 fell only 8.6% from day 5 (₹21.75 crore against ₹23.80 crore) across 16,793 shows. A film that opens that big usually crashes in week one. This one didn’t.
The Odyssey played a completely different game
Nolan’s film opened at ₹17.40 crore net. Modest next to Spidey, sure. But it beat Nolan’s own previous India opening-day record, Oppenheimer’s roughly ₹15 crore, per Hollywood Reporter India’s opening report. The three-day weekend landed at ₹61.30 crore net across 9,195 shows.
Then the legs kicked in. ₹119.65 crore net by day 10. ₹144.20 crore net and ₹172 crore gross by day 16. On that day 16 alone it jumped 84.1% over day 15, climbing from ₹3.15 crore to ₹5.80 crore.
An 84% single-day jump in week three is not normal. That’s word of mouth doing the work weeks after release, and it pushed The Odyssey past Oppenheimer’s ₹157 crore lifetime India gross. Nolan’s biggest Indian film ever, in other words. He lost the speed race and still broke his own ceiling. Our ranking of every Christopher Nolan movie and where The Odyssey lands puts that run in context.
Box office winner: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, comfortably. Faster, wider, bigger. But The Odyssey wins on trajectory, and that matters if you’re wondering whether it’s still worth catching in a theatre.
Story and Experience: Web-Slinging Spectacle vs 173 Minutes of Homer
Brand New Day picks up after the memory wipe from No Way Home. Peter Parker is rebuilding a life nobody remembers him having, and a psychic threat starts pulling at the edges of it. The ensemble goes wide — Jean Grey, the Punisher, Black Widow, Hulk all fold in. At 145 minutes it moves fast and it’s built for a full house.
The Odyssey does the opposite. Nolan adapts Homer straight: Odysseus taking ten years to get home from Troy, gods and monsters in the way, 173 minutes of it shot for IMAX. Matt Damon leads, with Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron around him. It’s slower. It’s heavier. It rewards a big screen and punishes a phone.
Here’s the connection nobody else is making: Tom Holland is in both. He headlines Spider-Man and plays Telemachus in The Odyssey. Same actor, same fortnight, two completely different registers.
Experience winner: depends entirely on your mood. Spider-Man for the whistles and the group outing. The Odyssey for the silence after.

Critics vs Audience: This One’s Basically a Tie
Critics lean Nolan. The Odyssey sits at 94% on the Tomatometer from 486 reviews, his best-reviewed film ever, ahead of The Dark Knight and Memento. Inverse’s Hoai-Tran Bui called it “a cinematic triumph.” Not everyone agreed. Nagier Chambers of Big Gold Belt Media pushed back in the same round-up: “The action is not as powerful as it should be.”
Audiences lean Spidey. Brand New Day holds a 90% critics score and a 98% Popcornmeter from over 10,000 ratings, which ties the highest audience score in MCU history — level with Shang-Chi, one point above No Way Home. The Odyssey’s 97% from 25,000-plus ratings is also a Nolan career record.
Four percentage points separate them with critics. One point separates them with viewers. Both are Certified Fresh. Quality is not the deciding factor here; taste is.
Reception winner: split. Critics say Odyssey. Crowds say Spider-Man. Take your pick.

The Verdict: Who Should Watch What
Watch Spider-Man: Brand New Day if you grew up on the MCU, you want the theatre roaring around you, and you’d rather have 145 tight minutes than a marathon. Also watch it if you care about record-books — a ₹300 crore net Hollywood run in India may not repeat for years.
Watch The Odyssey if you book Nolan on day one out of habit, you’ll drive to the nearest IMAX for it, and a three-hour myth doesn’t scare you. Its week-three surge says plenty of people walked out and told friends to go.
Can you skip one? If you only care about spectacle and shared-crowd energy, skip The Odyssey and stream it later. If franchise films tire you out, skip Spidey with a clear conscience. Serious film fans should just see both — Holland’s double appearance makes the pairing more interesting than either film alone.
My own take, for what it’s worth: Spider-Man won the box office, and The Odyssey is the one I’ll still be arguing about in December.
